| In
an effort to decrease boating-related drowning fatalities, the
US Army Corps of Engineers identified Corps lakes throughout the
Mississippi Valley Division for mandatory life jacket wear programs.
As
part of the program, Lake Red Rock has been selected as a site
to implement mandatory life jacket wear in 2012; however, in 2011,
the Lake Red Rock Corps staff will be seeking public input for
this policy.
During
the 2011 season, the Lake Red Rock Corps staff will commit considerable
effort on water safety education and soliciting input to help
formulate a policy to recommend for Lake Red Rock. Water safety
messaging will be communicated through: signage at Lake Red Rock
boat ramps; personal contacts with ranger staff; and through input
cards.
The
Corps is the nation's number one provider of water-related recreation.
Recent Coast Guard statistics show that drowning is the cause
of death in approximately three-fourths of boating fatalities
nationwide, and approximately 84 percent of those who drown are
not wearing life jackets.
