Lake Red RockVolksweg TrailThe Volksweg Trail offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the environment around you. You're invited to take a virtual tour of our Volksweg Trail and learn more about how the Corps of Engineers, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Marion County Conservation Board (MCCB) manage the area around Lake Red Rock. There are also several informative signs on the trail to help you understand the different management practices used at Lake Red Rock's resource areas.
By 1974, less than 10% of Marion county was forested. The Corps of Engineers has planted over 1,000,000 trees to restore a portion of the lost forested areas. Over the years, more than 60 species of grasses and prairie flowers have been planted by the Corps of Engineers, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Marion County Conservation Board (MCCB).
Fine is a needed tool to keep forest wealthy. Iowa Native tree species, like oak and hickory, depend on fire to clear the ground in order to aid the growth of new trees. Controlled woodland burns are accomplished in the fall after "leaf drop" by the corps of Engineers staff at the lake. Unwanted trees like honey locust, elm and ironwood are injured by fire, which over time can kill them.
These trees along the Volksweg Trail were planted in 1973.
Food plots are planted to aid deer, pheasants, and other animals around Lake Red Rock. Corn, sunflowers, or soybeans are often the crops grown. Food plots also provide shelter for the animals during the harsh winter months
